A good choice for your first. I'd go straight to the sound & the fury now. The first part isn't easy going, but it's also not as hard as many say. I should be ashamed to admit that I looked a bit at the Wikipedia page for the book, and it helped me to make sense of what I had read. I didn't read ahead (on Wikipedia). It's a great book.
