A smashing good read, if such terminology is ever appropriate to what is, let's face it, not the most life-affirming of subjects. This, the first volume of an envisaged trilogy aiming to be the most authoritative single account of the history of the Third Reich, certainly acheives this aim. While it is true that this work only serves to continue the domination of the Nazi period over German historiography as a whole, if you're going to do it, one might as well do it so well!

This one's really for Galician geeks. That much said, if you are one (as I am), and enjoy tales of nineteenth century railroads (okay), Ukrainian bandits (Damn straight, sign me up!), and really want to improve your pastoral (not in the religious sense) German vocab (ehh, this is more like eating vegetables... you know you should, you know that, long-term, it's useful, but...), then Pollack is certainly your man!

An excellent example of a new breed of Central European History. There is a growing movement in the field to abandon the "nation" as the model through which all history is told -- Professor Frank deftly handles a tremendous variety of sources in multiple tongues, tieing together a fascinating story, elegantly told, of conflicting extra-regional identities and the decline of empires.
