Short but vivid description of the incredibly harsh life of North Dakota homesteaders. the fact that the writer is Jewish is less important(except in one bit about finding a kosher butcher) as is the unimaginable poverty and discomfort of their lives. I read this book after hearing about her pushback against the judgmental Good Mother Police who had vilified her for some "I'm only human" comments she made online a while back. She's very funny and insightful (what you might expect from the wife of awesome writer Michael Chabon). It gets a bit repetitive toward the end (yes, I get it, you're not perfect and no one is), but her stories of her own family are quite gripping. Nothing like real-life stories of other imperfect families to make one feel validated, even though I still feel inadequate career-wise (she was a successful lawyer and is now a novelist). But whatever -- every working mother should read this, as well as quite a few SAHMs (stay-at-home moms) who act like they Know Best for everyone else. ]]>
