An amazing book, especially when you coincidentally read it just a few weeks after "The Handmaid's Tale." Stadium executions, anyone? Much more than "The Kite Runner," it portrays a long period in time when a lot of things were changing -- and a lot of terrible things happening to people -- in Afghanistan. Great characters. I especially liked the device of having two female main characters, though interestingly (since the author is a man), the male characters are much more one-dimensional, especially Rasheed, who is just too fucking evil to be believed. A great book, very upsetting in places but somewhat hopeful as well, in its portrayal of the human capacity to endure almost unimaginable suffering....less

An absolutely amazing book. Full of powerful emotions, graphic at times, it filled me with admiration and outrage. It's the gritty reality of being black in New York in the 1960s, yet so lyrical in its descriptions and dialogue that it's not real, if that makes any sense, but it didn't matter -- it should be required reading for every American adult....less

"Chilling thought-control novel along the lines of "1984." I wished the story were longer and more detailed, but Atwood makes her point.

Hypnosis is fascinating because it works so well and also because no one really knows HOW it works. Unfortunately it's often dismissed as fringe-y and unscientific, but this excellent book by a Harvard Medical School therapist uses real cases, both successes and failures, to offer insight into how it's used therapeutically. ...less

The ultimate in chick-lit -- a teenage girl yearning for her dead mother, lots of other mother figures real and symbolic, the strength of women... Oprah must have loved this one. yes it was sentimental, almost off-puttingly so in places, and improbable, but great characters and evocation of setting (South Carolina in 1964) make this worthwhile....less
