Interesting book by a veteran labor activist about the pros and cons of Starbucks. She concludes that on most issues Starbucks really is a better corporate citizen than most -- although she calls them out for union busting. It's a thought-provoking read for anyone who's ever taken a knee jerk anti-Starbucks line (thinking back to the dozen page thread on CU when the Short North Starbucks was first announced...and yeah, I posted in that thread).
Doubt I'll trade in my regular Luck Bros. stop for Starbucks as a result of this book, but it was a good read.

I think it could have been organized differently to make it clearer -- at times the thesis seems buried in the accretion of details about Wal-Mart newsletters from the 70s, free enterprise student clubs, etc. But overall a very interesting piece of historical work about how certain ideological and religious tendencies combined with a particular regional culture to change the economic and political culture of the entire country. Recommended to anyone interested in how we got to where we are now.
And quite a little surprise at the end when the author name-checks Donna Steele, an IP and 1199 member! Seems she read the George Packer article in the New Yorker last fall that profiled Donna ( http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/... ). (less)

Ironic birthday gift from a friend.
Not sure I can give it a fair review since I'm not familiar enough with romance novels (that was my late grandmother's specialty) to know how it rates by the conventions of the genre. The ending was telegraphed far from the end of the book, but maybe that's to be expected?
It was pretty much like reading a book-length hockey slash story without teh ghey buttsecks.(less)
