Shannon Shannon said: "I hated this book, all up in my heartstrings, pulling all over the place and being lovely and sweet and tough and real. The sarcastic humor of the kids was right on, and I wish my students were just a squeak older so I could read this to them. I'm su...more "

This was pretty remarkably close to what life was like at MST in high school.
Playing Loteria / El Juego de La Loteria (Bilingual) by Rene Colato Lainez
"This book highlights a situation that many children have in their families - a grandparent with a different primary language. The boy's mother encourages him to spend time with his grandmother in spite of a language barrier.

During his time with ab..." Read more of this review »

Iconic cute animal pictures, interesting facts about Northwest creatures, although the text isn't terribly creative.

Uncle Bobby's Wedding by Sarah S. Brannen
"Mixed feelings here. I found the storyline to be a little bit of a rip off of another book published earlier Uncle Peter's Amazing Chinese Wedding. It is also a bit strange to see the whole story be about guinea pigs. Why not real people? I am hap..." Read more of this review »

I'd love to study this book alongside A Hole is to Dig by Julian Scheer's contemporary, Maurice Sendak. This book also makes me think of Doodler Doodling, by Rita Golden Gelman and Paul Zelinsky. ALSO, the author was working for NASA when he wrote th...more

Magnificent book. Every single illustration would make a remarkable tattoo. I'm partial to the warthog in a tiara. Surreal illustrations in the style of Chris VanAllsburg.

Charlotte Brontë
“I have now been married ten years. I know what it is to live entirely for and with what I love best on earth. I hold myself supremely blest - blest beyond what language can express; because I am my husband's life as fully as he is mine. No woman was ever nearer to her mate than I am: ever more absolutely bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh. I know no weariness of my Edward's society: he knows none of mine, any more than we each do the pulsation of the heart that beats in our separate bosoms; consequently, we are ever together. To be together is for us to be at once free as in solitude, as gay as in company. We talk, I believe, all day long: to talk to each other is but more animated and an audible thinking. All my confidence is bestowed on him, all his confidence is devoted to me; we are precisely suited in character - perfect concord is the result.”
Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre

“…because nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about stuff… Nerds are allowed to love stuff, like jump-up-and-down-in-the-chair-can’t-control-yourself love it. Hank, when people call people nerds, mostly what they’re saying is ‘you like stuff.’ Which is just not a good insult at all. Like, ‘you are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness’.”
