this was a typical romance novel sequel. a bit that i particularly enjoyed was that it was understandable despite that i never read the original. however, i liked the world setup and the bad guys were interesting and fun, but i was a bit annoyed by Bronwyn's frustration/ bizarrely distant yet clingy boyfriend. overall, enjoyable but shallow....less

"cute, predictable, entertaining. if you're in the mood for this sort of thing, it's perfect. the book was a little too predictable, but i enjoyed the alternate world of Platform 13.

my god this was horrible. i couldn't get into the Native American legends, nor could i really be pulled in by the crisis that Singer was having. i was really interested in the parts with Cat in them (i was more interested in Singer's fears and final realization of Cat as a sentient being) than i was in the rest of the book. unfortunately, the bits with Cat in them are a minority in the book. i liked his motives, but it was lost in bullshit about Singer's dumb spirit journey where he battles himself. the book held nearly no coherency and overall, i'm impressed with myself that i finished it....less

this was chilling. this was Auschwitz at its worst that this one survivor saw, but managed to live through. they always seemed to pick someone else. even after the war was over, there were still deaths, and the camp survivors were returned to Germany. i was impressed at Vladeck's ability to keep in touch with his wife even in the camp, and i am impressed by his ability to tell even his son about his experience years later. the most chilling part of these books is that they are true....less

i loved this. while i thought that it wasn't necessary for all of the characters to be animals, i can appreciate why it was done. i thought the beginning was particularly funny (in a horrible sort of way). "if you lock them together in a room with no food for a week then you could see what it is, friends!" i also thought it was interesting that arty's father was unable to let go of the war (although, it was so horrible, i could kind of understand that, too). it was an interesting way of depicting an awful historical incident. i also thought it was so interesting that everything that i have ever read about the war happened to this one person. i really recommend this....less

wow the ending of this was abrupt. they closed the gate of bones, saved Haven, and poof! there was the end. they did wind up having problems with the natives, which was understandable, but slightly annoying. i thought it was a bit far fetched that they rescued Isabella and FireAnn so easily. i also thought that the "bad guys" became a bit too evil for reality (yes i'm talking about reality in a fantasy story). they became so evil that they were uninteresting. they would always choose the most evil path, no matter what. it made them predictable, which made them boring. also, the drain on the magickal powers due to being in Haven was beyond silly. it was just another plot point meandering from what was going on. this was actually worse than the other books as far as keeping up with the "basic" plot. there also were still some unresolved issues, such as the developing romance between Jason and Bailey, and the disassociation that they felt between themselves and the other people that lived in Haven. i also didn't like that the young magickers' parents were okay with them all moving to Haven with little to no fuss. it seems that "home schooling" means that no one even checks to see if you're gone from the house. it was a little unreal. overall, i wasn't terribly happy with this book (mostly because of the abrupt ending)....less

i thought that this book had a meandering plot line as well. there was an illness that was sapping energy/ life from the older magickers, but they really never delved into it until near the end. even then, it was left fairly unresolved. i did like Jason's friendship with the dragon, and the final opening of the fire gate using the dragon. i really enjoyed the character of the dragon, and was glad that he became more present in this book. i also thought it was dumb that despite finding the perfect world, no one seemed to realize that there could be other people there. especially since someone was "trading" with them. i also thought that the ending of this was a little too abrupt. i did like the characters, and hopefully all unresolved questions will be resolved in the last book....less

i liked this book. it had the same meandering style as the first one (which i found distracting). i also thought that the lack of Trent's powers was a little ridiculous that no one noticed. i was also annoyed that the "curse" was never explained. it was a vague threat that caused Jason to open the water gate, but it was never clear what it was. the book was still intriguing, and i appreciated the style well enough to read the third one....less

i thought that this book was really good, if a bit wandering in plot. i thought that if there had been more concentration on the central idea that it would have been slightly better. i did enjoy the theme (i always enjoy people discovering that they have magical powers) but i thought that it was a bit odd that Jason seemed to be "special" in some way (more so than everyone else). i realize that he was a gatekeeper, but wasn't there books or something on the subject? i feel that he did a bit too much by trial and error. otherwise, it was an engaging read (even with the extraneous side plots)....less
