I was very disappointed in this book. I've had it on my shelf for years (like many books) and I finally got around to reading it. I had high expectations because I'd heard great things about the book Cod by the same author and because I've been interested in the Basques since I stopped in Irun to change trains and I asked to buy a ticket in very bad spanish and the ticketmaster looked at me like I was the biggest idiot on the planet. I realized later that he was just pissed that I wasn't trying to speak to him in Euskera.
Anyway, the book, it was so-so. There was some good stuff on their specific brand of nationalism, there was some good stuff on the Spanish Civil War, there was some good stuff on ETA and the end of Franco... but it was a long haul getting to these good parts. It didn't seem to tie itself together until at least half way through the book. The opening chapters seemed pretty random. And the close was odd. There was a good quarter of the book though, that I would recommend. The rest... take it or leave it... probably leave it....less

it's always fun to read something which combines pop culture and games theory logic, and this book does take both these and tries to use them as weapons against any radical or revolutionary left politics, arguing instead for something like social democracy. The authors make many good points, but they also either misunderstand or dishonestly misrepresent a lot of the cultural politics they are mocking....less

Somewhat unfair of me to give this book two stars based simply on the fact that I had a lot of trouble understanding it. It is a book like many I have read, that would have best read with a class - a guide who could help me unlock the book. I had the same problem with Beloved, which I enjoyed a little more simply because I enjoy Toni Morrison's style of writing more than Woolf. This book certainly won't be the last that gets marks that are unduly low due to my own faults, but hopefully I'm getting better as I get older....less
