Reading the first half of the book was like biting on hot chillies. It's burning your mouth but you want to continue anyway. The first half of the book is messed up. The character struggles with a lot of terrible things that happen to her by lashing...more

Wow, what a joyful, marvelous read! The dialogues, and the self-reflection that Theo goes through the book are just brilliant. This book requires a second reading for me, but, for now a break from reading just to soak and marvel over the story.

This is such an enjoyable book - I absolutely loved reading it. The characters are flawed with bitterness and are twisted in their head but in the end I found myself sympathising Martha and her mother. Living in monotony and in gloom, they long for t...more

Too many bleak years have passed over this little spot of Central Europe, and they've drained all the warmth out of this house. They have killed any desire for friendliness and, let me repeat it, you won't find anything in the least like intimacy here.Albert Camus

How wonderful that must be! What we call spring here is one rose and a couple of buds struggling to keep alive in the monastery garden. [Scornfully] And that's enough to stir the hearts of the men in this part of the world. Their hearts are as stingy as that rose-tree. A breath of richer air would wilt them; they have the spring time they deserve.Albert Camus

“Misery colored by the greens and blues in my mother's voice took away all the grief out of the words and left me with a conviction that pain was not only endurable, it was sweet.”
Toni Morrison, The Bluest Eye

Rainer Maria Rilke
“depict your sorrows and desires, your passing thoughts and beliefs in some kind of beauty- depict all that with heartfelt, quiet, humble sincerity and use to express yourself the things that surround you,the images of your dreams and the objects of your memory. If your everyday life seems poor to you, do not accuse it; accuse yourself, tell yourself you are not poet enough to summon up its riches; since for the creator there is no poverty and no poor or unimportant place.”
Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet

Dante Alighieri
“In the middle of the journey of our life I came to myself within a dark wood where the straight way was lost. Ah, how hard a thing it is to tell what a wild, and rough, and stubborn wood this was, which in my thought renews the fear!”
Dante Alighieri, The Divine Comedy
