This will rip your heart out on more than one page. I could not put this down...which is odd for me. It is the story of Rick Rescorla, soldier, mercenary at times, and war hero -- who saved 2,700 people on 9/11 only to lose his own life.

Excellent work...he has done his homework. My only complaint is that he allows his evangelical biases to affect his view of Harry Emerson Fosdick and "liberal" Christianity.

Eye-opening to be sure. Kaplan really shows us how Petraeus and friends worked from the inside to change the Pentagon's perspective on "insurgencies" and 21st century warfare. This is not a book about his love life or any of that lurid affair, but ab ...more

Very interesting book -- combination novel and inspirational. Not really deep...but a good reminder of some basic truths at the core of human existence.

William Shakespeare
“If to do were as easy as to know what were good to do, chapels had been churches, and poor men’s cottages princes’ palaces. It is a good divine that follows his own instructions: I can easier teach twenty what were good to be done, than be one of the twenty to follow mine own teaching.”
William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice

William Shakespeare
“What hands are here? ha! they pluck out mine eyes! Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood clean from my hand? No; this my hand will rather the multitudinous seas incarnadine, making the green one red.” “My hands are of your colour; but I shame to wear a heart so white. A little water clears us of this deed: How easy it is then! Your constancy hath left you unattended.”
William Shakespeare, Macbeth

William Shakespeare
“Out, damned spot! out, I say!—One, two; why, then ‘tis time to do’t.—Hell is murky!—Fie, my lord, fie! a soldier, and afeard? What need we fear who knows it, when none can call our power to account?—Yet who would have thought the old man to have so much blood in him? The thane of Fife had a wife; where is she now?—What, will these hands ne’er be clean?—No more o’that, my lord, no more o’that: you mar all with this starting. Here’s the smell of the blood still: all the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. Oh, oh, oh!”
William Shakespeare, Macbeth

Haruki Murakami
“If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.”
Haruki Murakami, Norwegian Wood
