I'm really liking this book, but it's also breaking me inside just a bit. It's sweet and funny and other good things, but I find books with protags who are like me but way way younger super hard to read. Mostly 'cause they make me feel like I'm stuck in high school, like everyone else grew up and out of their awkward stage and I never will. I hate that feeling. Hm. I liked the writing style, and there were some characters I really LOVED in here. Junior Webster, Eubie, and Balder topped my favorites list. Plus there are some great, laugh out loud funny moments. But. My major issues with it didn't crop up until the end, and discussing them would be spoilery. So I won't.

Things I didn't love:

The slightly schizoid writing style, which, yes, makes sense for the story and the character. It's just not a style I really enjoy, so. There's that.

The plotline from pages 196-233. Yes, that's specific. It also really bugs.

The end.

To sum up! If you have the time, it's not a bad read. But I'm not going to tell you to run out and pick it up.

I'm clearly in the minority here, but I just didn't like this book at all. I'm not averse to a depressing sort of memoir; I liked Helen Forrester's books about her life and also Angela's Ashes, and neither of those is a bucket of sunshine. I don't think it was the art that turned me off either, I actually thought the gray tones and twisty style complimented the story really well.
