I generally enjoy Haddix's books but I really can't get behind this one, particularly the reveal at the end. Very far-fetched in my opinion. It is very reminiscent of The Giver and not nearly as well done. It is a page-turner and a fast read, however ...more

Love Jan Thomas. Will definitely need to explain "is that wise?" as that's not a phrase younger kids will definitely know. Taking this home to try on the resident 4YO though.

E.B. White
“A library is a good place to go when you feel unhappy, for there, in a book, you may find encouragement and comfort. A library is a good place to go when you feel bewildered or undecided, for there, in a book, you may have your question answered. Books are good company, in sad times and happy times, for books are people - people who have managed to stay alive by hiding between the covers of a book."

[Letters of Note; Troy (MI, USA) Public Library, 1971]”

John Green
“Adult librarians are like lazy bakers: their patrons want a jelly doughnut, so they give them a jelly doughnut. Children’s librarians are ambitious bakers: 'You like the jelly doughnut? I’ll get you a jelly doughnut. But you should try my cruller, too. My cruller is gonna blow your mind, kid.”
John Green

Walter Cronkite
“Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation.”
Walter Cronkite

George Orwell
“Every generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it.”
George Orwell
