Oh, I'm sure he is deeply disgusted, and of course it's an indictment of 'teh evil system'... but I'm not entirely sure Larsson 'gets it.' I'm not saying that he hates women or anything like that, but that he's like a stogey old white dude trying to be 'hip' and 'liberal.' "Dragon Tattoo" IMO could only be seen as 'feminist' from the crudest and most guy-centric perceptions. The whole 'chicks getting violent revenge on their rapists' thing has been exposed as being pretty unfeminist a long time ago. Basically, it gives people permission to enjoy the rape because those responsible are punished. Its just exploitational stuff- which is fine as far as I'm concerned, but it's hardly feminism.

He doesn't really go into the mindset of misogyny either. Why and how exactly do the perpetrators of these horrible crimes commit them? Um... because they're crazy Nazis? He doesn't even give a pattern or an explanation to their acts... they're just vaguely bibically supported or something. The annoying self-righteous facts about sexual violence to women -while enlightening- added nothing to the story.

Basically, eh.

This article did a pretty good job of summing up my feelings:

http://www.thefword.org.uk/reviews/2009/...

Interesting. I was actually quite touched by this one. I was a bit disappointed by the end though, as my theory for a while that *SPOILER*

The plotline about the guy looking for the cradle was actually a fictionalized account created by a guilty mother. I thought this due to certain similarities between her books at what was happening in the narrative *END SPOILER*

... but I guess I was wrong. Still, I really enjoyed it.

Matheson is great. Love his stuff. "I Am Legend" especially.

I say take your time reading man. Speed reading is all well and good to show off to your friends, but if you really want to appreciate a work's language and concepts, you should take it slow. If you rush through thirty books and can't recall much from them after, you might as well not have read them. That's my thought anyway.

Yeah, email me any time. I always like reading people's stuff.

More fun stories from the creator of Conan. Howard's an entertaining tale-spinner and you get the impression that he takes these silly stories very seriously, but I still don't understand why so many people idolize him. Still, no regrets reading this and the Del Ray editions are all gorgeous.
