Schuler has an annoying writing style and I think he underestimates how intimidating the entire barbell section of the gym is to women. The book briefly mentions the fact that women are more prone to sports related injuries, but it doesn't adequately address proper precautions women should take.

This book was good for a few laughs but is was not as entertaining as some of Sedaris's earlier work. He revisits several events that he has written about previously, and I got the feeling that he is running out of good material. It is always fascinating to read a book written from a perspective so completely different than mine. This tale is about a well know poet, returning from exile abroad to the small Turkish community of his childhood. I found the conflicts in the novel to be interesting: rural vs urban, east vs. west, religious vs. secular. After a while though, I got bored. I never really cared for any of the characters or their problems.
