A fascinating tale about a cook, told by a cook. I actually got sick while reading this. Just a cold, nothing serious. However, it made me think that, if Mary Mallon were my cook, she would probably have said something like, "Stop whining. People get sick all the time. Let me make you some of my special peach ice cream, and you'll feel better." Of course, people did get sick all the time around her, and her special peach ice cream was a likely culprit--because typhoid bacteria are likely to die in cooked foods, but her ice cream combined raw peaches with milk. Sweet, tasty, typhoid-infected yummyness. The perfect side dish for this quick, entertaining little book....less

"If you were on the fence about the previous books in this series, you really don't need to bother with this 800 page, whiny, Mary Jane fantasy...unless you're looking for a fashionable doorstop.

Stylistically, this was not an easy book to read. The author is frequently described as a "French cyberpunk," and there are good reasons for that. But, the story was so cool that I have to give it four stars. The concept sounds like X-Men (humanity as we know it is about to mutate into something different, and homo sapiens will soon go the way of the Neanderthals), but it plays out more like if Timothy Leary had given acid to a colony of Borg. I'm very curious how this will translate into a movie...with Vin Diesel, no less....less

If your main money concern is "Oh my God, how do I get out of debt?" try something by David Bach. However, if you're wondering why you can't seem to make peace with your own attitudes and behaviors about money, this is the book for you. Brent Kessel identifies eight financial archetypes (and you are sure to recognize yourself in at least one of them), and gives tips on how each can balance its strengths and weaknesses.
I originally read about this book in Yoga Journal, and was a tad hesitant it was going to be one of those hippie "let's all move to the country, and live off the land" books, but it's totally not. There are some spiritual aspects to Kessel's approach, but he draws from every major world religion, and uses meditation practices to help clear the reader's perspective (rather than ramming his own point of view down your throat).
This is not a "how to" money book, and it never claims to be. It's about recognizing and changing your relationship with money, something that goes further than balancing your checkbook, and paying off your credit cards. And in that respect, I heartily recommend it....less
