Mr. Flanagan’s written better, much better, and this book is quite frankly one a fan could skip. I know fan’s question things authors have written and some fan demand answers, but to me it’s often times better when the questions we have go unanswered. Some things are better left unsaid. Or in this case, unwritten. Even so, there are two stories in here that I loved. The rest were cannon fodder to fill the pages, in my opinion.

For example, I didn’t need to know that the ranger’s horses are retired after 15-16 years, replaced by similar looking horses renamed with the retired horse’s name. (The retired horse is given a new name.) This knowledge doesn’t provide anything in furthering the plot of prior stories. Maybe if it had been mentioned way back in book one it would have worked, but as a prequel it doesn’t. To me it’d be like Mr. Flanagan explaining how Rangers can talk to and understand their horses. It’s quirky, but cool and doesn’t need to be explained. Explaining it will ruin it.

I remember reading a film critic (can’t remember who, sorry.) writing about why the Star Wars prequels do not work. His (I remember it was a man) explanation was that prequels never work. Viewers (or readers) are familiar with the characters they’ve watched and in during the course of watching the characters grow on-screen, viewers have built up their own love/hate, trust/fear, etc. of them based on how the characters had been written up to the current point-in-time. Going back and expanding on a character’s pre-story to the point where it messes with the viewer’s perception of the characters in the future, is unfair to the viewer.

That said, one of the two stories I really liked in this book is a prequel story. But it’s a prequel story that explains how Halt came to Araluen lands and somewhat explains how he became the ranger he is. If I were to direct you to read any one story from this collection, The Hibernian would be it. Mr. Flanagan showed his true skill in this story. He brought forth some of Halt’s history, but did so in a way that does not change who Halt is today. If Mr. Flanagan were to write a trilogy, or more, regarding Halt’s and Crowley’s younger adventures, I’d pick the books up in an instant.

The only other story I immediately liked was the prologue. I can’t explain too much without spoiling, but I liked it and even though at first it jarred me, it fit once I was done with the book. I like how the epilogue didn’t tie all the stories together, but leads into something new.(less)
