This is a collection of essays and a few poems Mr. Berry wrote throughout the '80s. I enjoyed the read immensely my first time through, and have read many of the selections over since then. A five star rating, however, comes from the fact that it is one of those works of art that has seeped deeply into my thought process. It has impacted how I think and what I think about. It has shaped many of my long term goals. It has influenced what I read. I find myself thinking--and worse, even saying--things like "well, Wendell Berry says..." sporadically throughout the day. Thank you, Wendell.

One successful entertainment menu down with the help of the brilliant wine expert at my favorite market. I do enjoy this book. Food geek that I am, pouring over whatever great new cook book I can salvage off of a used bookstore shelf, that I enjoy such a book should not come as a shock. James Beard is the genius behind American cookery. I can only conclude with this: Please come over so I can entertain you with good food. And I do also appreciate your company, I promise. :-)

"A life unlived is like a book without words."

A book of magic has the secrets to gold and eternal life. A group of reluctant friends--neither used to caring for or being cared for by others--looks to it to overcome the hard knocks that life has dealt. N.D. Wilson has a fantastic story to tell in the second part of his trilogy. He unfolds it all just right. His narrative voice is wonderfully unique. On my first read my curiosity kept me going at a quick pace. On a second read I found myself still reluctant to put it down because I enjoyed being there in the story so much.
There is a awe provoking magic about the story--one that is beautiful and terrible and deep and intertwined in all of life. The narrative is also about a seeing that is more than optical. It involves truth, memory, being, naming, and story. It's the kind of magic that makes the world--the real world--a little more charged, more deep, and more full of wonder than before.
