While each of the stories are wonderful and rich in their own way, the first three tales (Alphinland) haven interconnected characters and Atwood's ability to play with perspective and point-of-view is exceptional.

Sarah and 52 other people liked Jamie's review of Alias Grace:
Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood
"Margaret Atwood occupies a strange nook in my heart. She's become a bit of a chore lately, as I'm including her in my senior honors thesis; on the other hand, I've now read almost all of her novels, and while none are bad or even...not really good..." Read more of this review »

Cosmopolis by Don DeLillo
"I'm not completely sure what existential angst is, but I am pretty certain this book gave me it. And nightmares. And it made me laugh out loud in places too, and some of the language stopped me in my tracks - mostly in a good way.

This was horribl..." Read more of this review »
Sarah and 17 other people liked Schuyler's review of Cosmopolis:
Cosmopolis by Don DeLillo
"This is book number eight on my journey to read everything written by Don DeLillo. I have not yet read his more famous works, Libra and White Noise, though I'm kind of saving them because in a way, I know it's probably going to be 'down hill' from..." Read more of this review »

“Human freedom involves our capacity to pause between the stimulus and response and, in that pause, to choose the one response toward which we wish to throw our weight. The capacity to create ourselves, based upon this freedom, is inseparable from consciousness or self-awareness. (p. 100)”
Rollo May, The Courage to Create

Jennifer Egan
“Structural dissatisfaction: Returning to circumstances that once pleased you, after having experienced a more thrilling or opulent way of life, and finding that you can no longer tolerate them.”
Jennifer Egan, A Visit from the Goon Squad

Jennifer Egan
“I’m done. I’m old, I’m sad - that’s on a good day. I want out of this mess. But I don’t want to fade away, I want to flame away - I want my death to be an attraction, a spectacle, a mystery. A work of art.”
Jennifer Egan, A Visit from the Goon Squad

Richard Wright
“The thing to do was to act just like others acted, live like they lived, and while they were not looking, do what you wanted.”
Richard Wright

Jennifer Egan
“There's a fine line between thinking about somebody and thinking about not thinking about somebody, but I have the patience and the self-control to walk that line for hours - days, if I have to.”
