“America... goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all.”
John Quincy Adams
Bluebeard by Kurt Vonnegut
“The darkest secret of this country, I am afraid, is that too many of its citizens imagine that they belong to a much higher civilization somewhere else. That higher civilization doesn’t have to be another country. It can be the past instead—the United States as it was before it was spoiled by immigrants and the enfranchisement of the blacks.

This state of mind allows too many of us to lie and cheat and steal from the rest of us, to sell us junk and addictive poisons and corrupting entertainments. What are the rest of us, after all, but sub-human aborigines?”
Kurt Vonnegut
The Furious Longing of God by Brennan Manning

This is an AMAZING book. It is a story of time travel, and also slavery. A modern black woman is thrown back into the ante bellum South and experiences the horrors of slavery firsthand.

What a wonderful, honest, heartfelt book about a man's journey to discovery and search for truth in light of his conservative Christian upbringing and beliefs, and the realization that he is gay. There is nothing here but a graceful revelation of wha ...more

“Christians obscured the good news by their efforts to restore morality to the broader culture?”
Philip Yancey, Vanishing Grace: What Ever Happened to the Good News?

Philip Yancey
“Jesus gave a vivid object lesson his last night with the disciples by washing their feet, like a servant. Parents know the self-giving principle by instinct as they pour their energies into their self-absorbed children. Volunteers in soup kitchens and hospices and mission projects learn this lesson by doing.* What seems like sacrifice becomes instead a kind of nourishment because dispensing grace enriches the giver as well as the receiver.”
Philip Yancey, Vanishing Grace: What Ever Happened to the Good News?

Philip Yancey
“The Quakers have a saying: “An enemy is one whose story we have not heard.” To communicate to post-Christians, I must first listen to their stories for clues to how they view the world and how they view people like me. Those conversations are what led to the title of this book. Although God’s grace is as amazing as ever, in my divided country it seems in vanishing supply.”
Philip Yancey, Vanishing Grace: What Ever Happened to the Good News?

Sarah Bessey
“Nothing changes in a true, God-lasting way when we use people or push agendas or make finger-pointing arguments or accusations of heresy.”
Sarah Bessey, Jesus Feminist: An Invitation to Revisit the Bible's View of Women

Rob Bell
“Jesus did not use hell to try and compel "heathens" and "pagans" to believe in God, so they wouldn't burn when they die. He talked about hell to very religious people to warn them about the consequences of straying from their God-given calling and identity to show the world God's love.”
