This book is legitimately funny, and I don't throw that around lightly.

The best thing Hely does is capture that place that a lot of us live in: when the narrator meets someone he's impressed with, he tends to think of them as self-serious and condescending. When he meets someone he feels superior to, he starts to act self-serious and condescending himself. I hate to admit it, but I saw a lot of myself in the narrator.

Good stories, but not a great book. I do give him credit for sharing absolutely everything. I can't give him the same credit for being honest, because two or three stories are quite clearly embellished. Exaggerating one story ruins the whole gimmick; the whole appeal is that these are true stories.

I don't think of myself as someone who procrastinates, but Buzzy Bissinger came to my high school in 1990 and read from this book. I said, "I'm going to read that book." Well, I guess I've been really busy for the past 19 years, because I just checked that off my to-do list.

This is a fascinating book, but it's a little exhaustive. What really pulls you in the crazy measures that the towns go to in order to win football games. The lynch mob that went after the algebra teacher who failed the running back for not going to class, not doing his homework, and not passing his tests stands out as a prime example. Some of the socioeconomic investigations go a bit too far, and the stuff about why Dukakis lost to George 41 is just so hopelessly dated and irrelevant, you wish the publisher would remove the pages.
