In some ways The Tropic of Serpents is a worthy successor to A Natural History of Dragons and in some ways... it's just not.

It's a bit slow, and there are no dragons for the first 150+ pages. Lady Trent herself remains a pleasure to read and the w

So the wait for book two is gonna be a biiiitch.

But at least I will have time to process all those clever twists and all these feels that I currently have.

Well done, Ms. Caine. I liked your vampire books (in fact it's the only ongoing vampire seri

Better than the first and getting better with each chapter. Character-wise, this series and Elisa have come very far -- with some to go, but kudos for the vast improvement over the course of book one and into The Crown of Embers.

Also, re: the Ship?

I actually liked this one for the mythology and creativity, despite some issues within the story and the characters. It felt almost like a teenage version of The Historian, which, of course, was when I liked it most.

Not without its share of flaws and tropes, but an entertaining and engaging debut fantasy novel.

So this was fun, I liked the narrative frame as well as featuring such a strong female friendship. I guess...I just never really invested in the characters and that's kinda the point of a contemporary? IDK.

Review to come.

Not bad, but some weaker aspects of the novel's plot kept this from a higher rating.

Rick Yancey
“But if I'm it, the last of my kind, the last page of human history, like hell I'm going to let the story end this way. I may be the last one, but I am the one still standing. I am the one turning to face the faceless hunter in the woods on an abandoned highway. I am the one not running but facing. Because if I am the last one, then I am humanity. And if this is humanity's last war, then I am the battlefield.”
Rick Yancey, The 5th Wave

R.L. LaFevers
“Truly, we are the gods' own children, forged in the fire of our tortured pasts, but also blessed with unimaginable gifts.”
R.L. LaFevers, Dark Triumph

Sarah J. Maas
“I was as unburdened as a piece of dandelion fluff, and he was the wind that stirred me about the world.”
Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Thorns and Roses

Ann Aguirre
“The ship shudders as we make the leap, passing into grimspace. Pleasure spikes through me, as if I'm taking a hit of my favorite chem. It sings through my veins, echoing the mad whorl of colors outside the view screen. If I had to describe it, I'd say it's like entering the heart of a dying star.”
Ann Aguirre, Doubleblind

Rosamund Hodge
“Where you go, I shall go; where you die, I shall die, and there will I be buried.”
Rosamund Hodge, Cruel Beauty
