This was a real page-turner with some excellent, fully developed characters that I ended up caring deeply about. I loved the element of meaning vs. coincidence, of the importance or art and artistic expression, and I thought the events to be very rea ...more

This is a wonderfully quirky, life-affirming summer read with a myriad of great characters who are all connected in intriguing ways. Not at all what I expected, but I loved it! Might even have to try some of the recipes in here.

John Williams' Stoner is an incredibly quiet, melancholy read. I could say that I loved it, but it wouldn't quite cover the extent of my awe for this novel as I was left completely breathless by its beauty, depth and authenticity. I read the last hal ...more
Stoner by John Williams
“In his forty-third year William Stoner learned what others, much younger, had learned before him: that the person one loves at first is not the person one loves at last, and that love is not an end but a process through which one person attempts to know another.”

I read this novel as part of Izzy's middle school summer project. She didn't care much for it and neither did I. It's ok, but a little boring. However, it conveys quite well the terrible human cost involved when refugees wait for the outcome of their ...more

Elmore Leonard
“Elmore Leonard's Ten Rules of Writing

1. Never open a book with weather.
2. Avoid prologues.
3. Never use a verb other than "said" to carry dialogue.
4. Never use an adverb to modify the verb "said”…he admonished gravely.
5. Keep your exclamation points under control. You are allowed no more than two or three per 100,000 words of prose.
6. Never use the words "suddenly" or "all hell broke loose."
7. Use regional dialect, patois, sparingly.
8. Avoid detailed descriptions of characters.
9. Don't go into great detail describing places and things.
10. Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip.

My most important rule is one that sums up the 10.

If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it.”
Elmore Leonard

Søren Kierkegaard
“Above all, do not loose your desire to walk. Every day I walk myself into a state of well-being and walk away from every illness. I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it.”
Søren Kierkegaard

Haruki Murakami
“In this world, there are things you can only do alone, and things you can only do with somebody else. It's important to combine the two in just the right amount.”
Haruki Murakami, After Dark

Mark Twain
“There are many humorous things in the world; among them, the white man's notion that he is less savage than the other savages.”
Mark Twain, Following the Equator: A Journey Around the World

Karen Blixen
“When in the end, the day came on which I was going away, I learned the strange learning that things can happen which we ourselves cannot possibly imagine, either beforehand, or at the time when they are taking place, or afterwards when we look back on them.”
Karen Blixen, Out of Africa / Shadows on the Grass
