Dry and wonky, pretty academic, but puts forth a provocative theory about the comparative role of the public and private sectors in innovation - specifically, that innovation and economic growth is not stifled by, but indeed depends upon, an active p ...more

This book is very tough to read but, I think, very important to read as well. The basic outline of her case is irrefutable - that the criminal justice system, and in particular the set of policies and practices that comprise the drug war, have a larg ...more

Terrific, freewheeling book of David Byrne's thoughts on music and life. There's some general theoretical principles of why music matters and its role in our lives, and also some specific detail on the process of making Talking Heads albums and David ...more

This is more of a 3 1/2 star review - it's a very well-done book but left me a little cold, less engaged by it/disturbed by it than I think is intended. It's two dystopias in one - a straightforward, well-described and convincing sci-fi dystopic worl ...more

Really well-done - a great story. It takes place in the 1550s in the New World; it's based on a true story of lost Spanish conquistadors, told from the perspective of a Moroccan slave. Highly recommend.

Fred Rogers
“We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It's easy to say "It's not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem." Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.”
Fred Rogers

Amor Towles
“As a quick aside, let me observe that in moments of high emotion....if the next thing you're going to say makes you feel better, then it's probably the wrong thing to say. This is one of the finer maxims that I've discovered in life. And you can have it, since it's been of no use to me.”
Amor Towles, Rules of Civility
