some interesting parts relating to working on a small vegetable farm, but plenty of wandering ramblings too. The author is full of praise for the farming way of life, but not actually willing to live that way long term.

I'm so glad to return to Mitford! Jan Karon does another excellent job of making ordinary lives meaningful. I love her insights into how relationships work in so many different ways--marriage, friendship, pastoral care--a very good read!

An honest story of growing up in a fundamentalist cult, getting away, and holding on to faith all the same. Good food for thought and discussion.

I was drawn in by the originality of reading a fun romance story told from the points of view of everyone BUT the main characters. The author handled this creative idea well, painting the plot through lots of lenses, allowing the reader to see the co ...more

an easy read suitable for late elementary or early young adult. I wonder what a kid would actually think of the stream--of-consciousness type writing style and the somewhat haphazard narrative. I didn't always follow well, but also found the voice to ...more

A thoroughly creative and original book, there was probably a lot here that I didn't figure out because I didn't think hard enough while reading! The book explores, through text, images, and layout, ideas about what goes on between readers and books ...more

“It has often been said
there’s so much to be read,
you never can cram
all those words in your head.

So the writer who breeds
more words than he needs
is making a chore
for the reader who reads.

That's why my belief is
the briefer the brief is,
the greater the sigh
of the reader's relief is.

And that's why your books
have such power and strength.
You publish with shorth!

E. Nesbit
“Don't you think it's rather nice to think that we're in a book that God's writing? If I were writing a book, I might make mistakes. But God knows how to make the story end just right--in the way that's best for us."
Do you really believe that, Mother?" Peter asked quietly.
Yes," she said, "I do believe it--almost always--except when I'm so sad that I can't believe anything. But even when I don't believe it, I know it's true--and I try to believe it.”
