Her reaction to the Germans wasn't necessarily all positive: remember her line about how the old women looked at the Germans and wished them dead but the young women just looked at them?
I think Nemirovsky captures the conflicting reactions very well. I recently read a description of a little boy's reaction to the occupying Germans: they were so tall, strong, and good-looking, that he nearly felt that they were gods of war destined to be his country's conquerors. ]]>
