This was a great story - starting in the 1940s it chronicles the life of a woman with a promising academic career who ends up not fulfilling her own dreams because her husband's needs come first. I felt it was very much an "everywoman" kind of a tale ...more

Randomly selected on a "nothing is captivating me at the moment, just give me something different" library visit and it fulfilled the brief. Magic and mysteries in London. Just what I needed at the time. Will read more at some point.

The third volume of the "Last Hundred Years" trilogy which began in 1920. I totally couldn't see how she was going to finish this one without it being really tame or really stupid or just incomplete. But, oh God I love Jane Smiley, there is the most ...more

I'm dragging out reading the rest of Penelope Lively's back catalogue as they are all near classics and there isn't that long until the day that it will run out on me.

I would never have read this if it was in the original cover that Goodreads has just offered me (woman with head out of shot and a gun tucked into her knickers), so there is something to be said for reissuing books in new editions! With a less object ...more

I loved this and thought the story was really clever. I gave it to Darren to read and he decided all the twists were obvious (spoiler: he didn't get any of them right) therefore he put it down and he didn't finish it and so I never got to discuss it ...more

Read sometime in the summer; ongoing series. I have no memory of it being particularly good or especially bad!

Middle volume of the trilogy. I waited too long after reading the first one and struggled to figure out all the characters. The weakest of the three but it still gets four stars because the other two are very excellent indeed.

After keeping track of every book I've read this millennium I'm in danger of losing track which I don't want to do. I've been reading slower than ever as well, which is curious. Anyway, borrowed from Darren and I loved it.
