It took me a while to get into this story, and I found myself grazing over a lot of the detail. There are all the hallmarks of a Robin McKinley--tomboy with daddy issues, faithful animal companions, a certain type of magic. But there wasn't a whole lot else, really, since the plot was just Sleeping Beauty. It was a little long for what I "learned" from it. I don't feel particularly attached to any of the characters, and the over-long finale was, well, over-long, and vague. Karam's review sums this up perfectly. Even though I raced through it, it wasn't because I was enjoying it, it was because I was waiting for something to happen that never did. There was so little action in the book, I don't understand why it was as long as it was. I did like some of the details (like seeing in the dark means you can't see shadows in the daytime), but many of them were just dull and tossed-in seeming. Maybe it had something to do with the characters being so two-dimensional.
