This is the first book I've read for pleasure in quite awhile. I raced through it, read the whole the thing in about 24 hours. Usually books of short stories take me awhile because I never quite engage with the characters, but these stories are connected by a single narrator and a cast of recurring characters. I might argue that the book is really a novel, not short stories, but that's neither here nore there. The narration just pulls you in and the manner in which he describes life that is so mundane makes it seems so extraordinary, so much power in all the small moments that make up life.
Diaz is Dominican and some of the stories depict his early life in Santo Domingo, so for about a minute and half, as I was enjoying the first few stories, I was thinking of recommending or loaning the book to some of my more advanced students, many of whom are Dominican. But several of the stories are rather graphic or sexually frank to the point that I don't think it's quite appropriate for me to loan this book out to them. But it's good writing and I'm tempted to recommend it to students under the heading "Someday, when you're older . . ."...less

"I'm beginning the Bradbury unit with my kids and I quite enjoy these stories. They're vastly more challenging than most of the stuff I've gotten to teach, but also vastly more interesting. I'm hopeful the kids will enjoy it.
