I often read simply to put my eyes on a page of words, falling asleep to stories that are not my own. When I hold up a book and rest my eyes on another world, I can relax and lose myself to the story. Reading calms my nerves, takes away my daily pressures.

I can see myself through the eyes of others, and feel less alone because of it. To me, reading is hope, another way of looking at what I see every day, a way to wonder what life might look like otherwise. Without looking at what could be, I don't know how I would learn as much as I do about what is meaningful in my life. An example of this is when I read Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder. The story of a doctor breaking international and political ground, risking his life at times, sacrificing personal comforts to provide medical care for Haitian communities, has connected the personal act of reading to a higher purpose. Reading stories, fiction and nonfiction, grounds my life decisions by helping me understand and serve the communities that I work hard to support. Reading is a reflection on what is important, a creative, unpredictable journey, and my ultimate joy.
