1 / 5 Books “The plot was predictable. The characters seemed one dimensional; I couldn’t engage with any other them. I wouldn’t read any more books by this author.” 3 / 5 Books “I like historical fiction, so that part of the book was good. However, I thought the story was too predictable.” 3.5 / 5 Books “I didn’t like the characters; they were too stereotypical. I did like the plot and the historical part that was set in WWII.” 3.5 / 5 Books “The historical aspect of the book was good. I loved the characters, and ended up crying a lot. I didn’t like the ending though.” 4 / 5 Books “I love reading historical fiction. I liked the characters in this story, but thought that Meredith was a pain the behind. Also, I thought the ending was unnecessary and unrealistic. But I liked the book overall.” 4 / 5 Books “The historical setting and the characters were great. The ending was unbelievable.” 4.5 / 5 Books “I liked the character development, and the interpersonal relationships. I felt like I knew the characters. The ending was questionable.” 4.5 / 5 Books “The writing was lyrical. I liked the flashbacks. I loved the plot and characters. Some events seemed too coincidental.(less)"

We had a special treat of masala chai tea and sugar cookies. Most readers enjoyed the story and insight into another culture, but were disappointed by the coincidental deus ex machina at the end of the novel. The average rating given to this book was 3.83; the highest score was a 4.5 and the lowest was 3.
3 / 5 “The story didn’t tie together. It was pretty far fetched. However, it was interesting."
3.5 / 5 “I liked the romance of the story, but felt it was too unprofessional overall. I also disliked that key points were left out, and this nagged at me.”
3.5 / 5 “It was a good story, but the plot was loose. The inconcsistencies of the story bothered me.” 3.5 / 5 “I liked the intertwined stories and vivid descriptions of India. I would have enjoyed more character development."
4 / 5 “It was a little ridiculous that letters from about 100 years before would survive the humid Indian climate and be found by a bored housewife. Sometimes the language used felt too modern. I could tell that Evie and her husband had tough times still ahead of them. However, I liked it; I was invested in the characters.”
4 / 5 “The book featured good storytelling and an interesting locale. There were too many plot holes and coincidences to make me happy."
4 / 5 “I loved the setting!”
4.5 / 5 “I loved everything about this book.”
4.5 / 5 “I enjoyed the tone of the books, its characters and its setting. The ending seemed rushed and coincidental.(less)"

“It was an OK read. It starts out with a lot of promise, but doesn’t deliver. However, the family
dynamics were a good illustration of how we all interpret ‘reality’ differently.”
3 / 5
“Some of the parts were confusing. It was sometimes hard to distinguish points of view or who
was thinking. I did like the contrast between the sisters.”
3.5 / 5
“The writing was good, but I couldn’t get into any of the characters.”
3.5 / 5
“The story was engaging and written well. However, the narrator was totally unreliable. The
characters were not very likeable either. Some storylines were brought up, but never resolved.”
3.5 / 5
“It left me with more questions than answers, which may have been the author’s intent since
the story’s subtext was about the subjectivity of reality. The family dynamics were interesting.”
3.5 / 5
“I would’ve liked a longer timeframe during which the story evolved; four days over a holiday
weekend seemed forced and quick. The family dynamics were dysfunctional, but realistic.”
4 / 5
“I liked the family dynamics of story because I can see similar things in my own family. I was
confused by how ill the father actually was. Unfinished storylines were annoying.”(less)
