David and 3 other people liked Emma's review of Solitude: A Return to the Self:
Solitude by Anthony Storr
"In the flood of books in all fields about social behaviour, a book extolling the virtues of solitude stands out. Storr critiques the premise of much psychotherapy (esp attachment theory) that we need to be fixed so that we can have fulfilling soci..." Read more of this review »

I enjoyed the first 100 pages or so, some interesting thoughts on life but the longer it went on the less interesting it became. It seemed to become more hollow as the story went on. I would give it 2.5 stars if i could.

Albert Einstein
“If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.”
Albert Einstein

Anthony Storr
“Some split between the inner world and outer world is common to all behaviour, and the need to bridge the gap is the source of creative behaviour.”
Anthony Storr

W.B. Yeats
“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”
W.B. Yeats

Doris Lessing
“Ideally, what should be said to every child, repeatedly, throughout his or her school life is something like this: 'You are in the process of being indoctrinated. We have not yet evolved a system of education that is not a system of indoctrination. We are sorry, but it is the best we can do. What you are being taught here is an amalgam of current prejudice and the choices of this particular culture. The slightest look at history will show how impermanent these must be. You are being taught by people who have been able to accommodate themselves to a regime of thought laid down by their predecessors. It is a self-perpetuating system. Those of you who are more robust and individual than others will be encouraged to leave and find ways of educating yourself — educating your own judgements. Those that stay must remember, always, and all the time, that they are being moulded and patterned to fit into the narrow and particular needs of this particular society.”
Doris Lessing, The Golden Notebook

Aldous Huxley
“After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.”
Aldous Huxley, Music at Night and Other Essays
