This goes without saying since this novel is probably his best-known, but this is classic Murakami. Great realism—Murakami's mundanity is one of my favorite aspects of his work—of course intermixed with something that feels paranormal, or just weird.

I think I may have been spoiled by reading some of his newer stuff first, though, because although it was fun to see many of his favorite motifs and elements in something of an embryonic form, I couldn't help but think that a more recent novel like Kafka on the Shore was pulled off better.

My biggest gripe about the book was that I didn't feel that it was resolved satisfactorily, but that's somewhat subjective, I suppose.

Excellent book and highly recommended, but Murakami's stuff is first-rate in general.
