The absence of all things and people remotely jewish, while traveling in Malaysia and Indonesia, was an evasively (wd?)subtle yet spookily tragic experience, that I'll never forget. Jews share themselves/beliefs/morals and their culture rarely with obviousness or obnoxiousness, in your face demanding acknowledgement and agreement, unlike most christians or people of majorities. They are a subtle existence in american life. Yet pervasively interwoven in a way so vital to my fabric that you don't realize it till its gone. I'm tearing up now, remembering the tragic realization I had in Bukitingii, my first jewless place, the realization of their absence. The realization of their absence, the emptiness, the hellish abyss of nonexistence, in all of these Malaysian and Indonesian citizens' lives, in the children's lives who've never had the choice or opportunity, the privelege to have a jewish friend, like the lack of color in that one movie "Pleasantvilleville." It petrifies me to imagine how it feels to be a person like Hitler that would want to erase a whole people and everything they are or have touched. It petrifies me that well meaning leaders have effectively accomplished hitler's dream vortex in their countries, in their countrymen's lives. How bizarre and tragic to not have orange, yellow, red, green, blue!!! How tragicly pathetic to fear for your children soooo much that a parent or patriarch would strive to protect them from everything that is life, the ache of joy, the ache of beauty, the ache of love, the suffering of sense, of all sensation and conciousness! of color, of the best children's storybooks! Isn't Dr Seuss/ Theodor Geisel jewish? A mother's touch (I saw a young woman so fundamentalist in her practice that she held her screaming toddler with full length black gloves in sweltering heat, so as not to expose a cell of bare skin. It was in Thailand, on the boat to Ko Yao.)
I think Shell Silverstein was known to be gay? Didn't he win a noble peace prize too? How is it that someone who wins a Noble Peace prize can be censored? How is it that kids' books can be censored? (or books at all?)A Sendak kids' book was censored in America because of a nude butt illustrated!
I recomend E.E.Cummings ...less "
