3.5 really. For the first half, I would read Updike's prose and make appreciative little sounds at his amazing grasp on human nature and the ability to phrase it as intelligently and succinctly as possible. I snuggled down with this book, and I enjoyed the hell out of it for the first 150 pages. Then it kind of stalled out, and it seemed like he was just...trying to finish it.

I'd recommend it, but it could have been tighter, better.
