| This is a great novella, stripped bare of anything except the life and times of Robert Grainier. A hard working man with a life full of loss, surviving as best he can after losing everything. The story moves quickly through his life, revealing little...more | |

| The story of Oscar Wao and the few close friends and family in his life. Get ready for footnotes, because this book reads like a history lesson. Parts written in Spanish without translation or explanation do not help. I'm not sure what Diaz was going...more | |

| Flatland. What a novel. I understand the references to Victorian society, but holy hell. This is one of the most sexist stories I've ever read. Women are pointed line segments to be avoided because they can impale men at any time, signalling their in...more | |

| Another decent collection of humour from the oatmeal. I still think his writing is stronger as individual blog posts rather than a collection like this. I'm tempted to read through in one sitting, but doing so loses some of the magic within and I'm l...more | |

| I've had a hard time getting around to writing this review. This book hooked me and has not let go, long after I've finished it. The characters are very well written, full of lust, hate, angst, jealously, longing and love that translates really well...more | |

| A satirical spy manual on guns, drinks, style, dining and gambling. Funny, but much more so if you can read it with Archer's voice in mind. I'm not a huge fan, so it just felt like a quick read for a laugh. | |
“I have seen them stagger out of their movie palaces and blink their empty eyes in the face of reality once more, and stagger home, to read the Times, to find out what's going on in the world. I have vomited at their newspapers, read their literature, observed their customs, eaten their food, desired their women, gaped at their art. But I am poor, and my name ends with a soft vowel, and they hate me and my father, and my father's father, and they would have my blood and put me down, but they are old now, dying in the sun and in the hot dust of the road, and I am young and full of hope and love for my country and my times, and when I say Greaser to you it is not my heart that speaks, but the quivering of an old wound, and I am ashamed of the terrible thing I have done.”

“My gosh, Nick, why are you so wonderful to me?'
He was supposed to say: You deserve it. I love you.
But he said,'Because I feel sorry for you.' 'Why?' 'Because every morning you have to wake up and be you.”

“It’s a very difficult era in which to be a person, just a real, actual person, instead of a collection of personality traits selected from an endless Automat of characters.”
