After a horrible event, this book follows the emotional journeys of all those involved. The exploration of guilt, grief, and the reverberations we feel at the seams presents a bit of life that I recognize right away. It has a fairly good ending for a book of this type as well. And for you lit geeks, it has an interesting use of first person AND third person omniscient perspectives. I really liked this one....less

Tell me a story, Nunberg says. His ultimate argument, written and supported well, is that conservatives have woven this narrative in which liberals are these elitist snobs who are trying to put a gay marriage in every pot and kill all the babie they can get their hands on, resulting in the downward spiral of Western Civilization. Nunberg shows through careful analysis how this narrative is actually accepted even by liberals and the mainstream media despite its being demonstrably false.
In order to make leftist political ideas as reasonable and common sensical as they were in the days of FDR what is needed, he says is an alternative narrative where the elites are greedy lords of capital giving the working man the shaft courtesy of the GOP. Democrats seek to protect and advnace the interests of those who are working hard and playing by the rules.
It's a good story. More importantly, a true one....less

Our three year old was doing a lot of screaming and hitting and we had tried a host of different ways of dealing with this problem. This book gave us the perspective on our own behavior that we needed to figure out how to change his behavior.
We learned the key points of the "program," which requires that you implement certain changes in a given order, and then did not explicitly and deliberately stick with it as a program the way one sticks with a diet to achieve better eating habits. instead, we internalized what we learned and began to see some of the levers we were pulling with our son and were able to interact differently with him on order to change his behavior.
The book could be better, but anything taht works so well so fast gets five stars from me.

I avoided this one for a long time because it's popular and apparently my suburb-living, Diet Mountain Dew drinking, American Idol-watching self is just too far above the commercial fray to partake. I'm so glad I finally read this book. here's a book that showed me something different about the Muslim experience, the tribal experience, the "third world" experience. And its story of tragic fall and heroic redemption reaches heights seldom found. Give yourself a gift and join the masses on this one....less

I love the communitarian perspective. It unites the desire for a culture where we all cooperate rather than remaining individuals in tooth and nail competition but it also demands moral boundaries and preservation of traditions. Progressives and conservatives, fundamentalists and mystics, everyone will see a great deal of themselves and perhaps find a piece they didn't realize had been missing.
I give it four stars for execution - these academic essays are not addressed only to a lay reader and can get dry at times. Well worth the effort! ...less
