"This is definitely a difficult book to read, especially since I'm reading the original French text, the writing style is rather detached and I have to pause and translate the words into English in my head. But, it's good so far." May 07, 2011 03:53am

“My uncle used to let me pretend they were bricks," Linden says, startling me. He eases a thick hardcover from the shelf, hefts it in either hand, and then places it back. "I like to build houses out of them. They never came out exactly like I'd planned, but that's good. It taught me that there are three versions of things: the one I see in my mind, and the one that carries onto the paper, and then what it ultimately becomes."

For some reason I'm finding it difficult to meet his eyes. I nod at one of the lower shelves and say, "Maybe it's because in your mind you don't have to worry about building materials. So you're not as limited."

"That's astute," he says. He pauses. "You've always been astute about things.”

“We can change so many times in our lives. We're born into a family, and it's the only life we can imagine, but it changes. Buildings collapse. Fires burn. And the next second we're someplace else entirely, going through different motions and trying to keep up with this new person we've become.”

“So did you really mean all that stuff you said when I was a dead man?"
"Every word."
"Could you say it again?" he asks. "My memory's a little fuzzy."
"Which part?" The part where I said I wanted to stay with you forever?"
"Yeah," he murmurs, his face close to mine, his breath hot on my cheek.
"When I said that I love you?"
He pulls back a little, searches my eyes with his. "Yes. Say it."
"I love you."
He takes a deep, happy breath. "I love you," he says back. "I love you, Clara."
Then his gaze drops to my lips again, and he leans in, and the rest of the world simply goes away.”

“It doesn't taste anything like the drink I had at the party with Tucker. And now, almost two years later, I realize why. Tucker never put any rum in my rum and Coke.
That little stink.
That overly protective, impossible, infuriating, and utterly sweet little stink.
In that moment I miss him so much my stomach hurts.”

“What we have is divine. It's beautiful and good and right. I feel it..." He presses his his hand to his chest, over his heart. "I feel it all the time. You're in here, part of me. You're what I go to bed thinking about and what I wake up to in the morning.”
