This is very short - a poem you can read in just a few minutes. It is also thought-provoking and, I think, somewhat controversial with certain people, even today. The last line hit me hard.

The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin
“There are so many things to be scared of in this world: blooms of jellies. A sixth extinction. A middle school dance. But maybe we can stop feeling so afraid. Maybe instead of feeling like a mote of dust, we can remember that all the creatures on this Earth are made from stardust.
And we are the only ones who get to know it.
That's the thing about jellyfish: They'll never understand that. All they can do is drift along, unaware.
Humans may be newcomers to this planet. We may be plenty fragile. But we're also the only ones who can decide to change.”

I knew I had to buy this book when the description on the back almost made me tear up in the store. Then I read the first paragraph, and the writing was so beautiful, I knew I'd made the right decision. Seriously, this is just a beautifully written b ...more

“I believe
in love at first sight
but I will always believe
that the people
we love
we have loved before.
Many, many, many times before
and when we stumble
through grace and circumstance
and that brilliant illusion of choice
to finally meet them again,
we feel it faster
each time through.
The one glance
that set life alight
is two sets of two eyes
staring through the layers
of lifetimes and stolen glances
and first kisses and hands held;
the brace against the weight
and unrelenting tide
of waiting.
I believe
in love at first sight
but am not burdened with the misconception
that it's a first sight
at all.”

“She rested her face against the glass of the window, wondering why no one ever saw fit to prepare you for age, to tell you that the emotions would still be young, that the heart would still hurt, that the soul would long to flee the aging bones and skin and that that would be the damnation of age, unable to escape the prison of traitorous flesh. Unable to quit yearning for that which was no longer possible.”

The Accuracy of English Newspaper Accounts of the Irish Potato Famine (1845-1849) (History)
12 chapters   —   updated Mar 29, 2010 04:33PM
Description: Oh, look! Boring stuff! This is my senior thesis from college. History wasn't my major, but my very wise advisor urged me to write about something I loved. So Irish history it was. I tied it in to my journalism major with the bit about newspaper accounts. Now I'm unhappy with it and wish I could rewrite it.
