It is now clear: Coetzee has been added to my top five pantheon of writers. I knew this yesterday, upon finishing Diary of a Bad Year, and the stupefaction that the last two pages brought. I won't even try to explain why, and those who read it, and feel the same, will know why. Or how about: life, death, writing; that's all ye need to know.
Within hours, was diving into this book. Oh, man, what a writer; what a thinker.
For those who have yet to read Coetzee, I have no idea whether the order I've thus far read his books matters -- I doubt it does; I think it's a matter of how receptive one is to the writing, but for what it's worth: started with Life and Times of Michael K (nearly a decade ago); then Disgrace (when it was published), then Diary, now Barbarians, which was written, I believe, in '80.
