What do you all think of the trend of making full length feature films from picture books? Any favorites? Any you hate?

What do you think will be the next one to come out? I am betting on "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" LOL

This wasn't what I thought it would be. I thought it would give various tips on how to get my child to want to turn off the tv and put down video games and WANT to read books. Instead, after a brief introduction, it is a list of books with questions you can ask your child about each book. They tend to be the sorts of books that kids who are already readers are going to want to read. (The books she lists usually contain "big issues", especially the chapter books.) She doesn't list the totally fun books like "Captain Underpants".

This would be a good resource for teachers and homeschoolers, but I prefer Jim Trelease's "Read Aloud Handbook" which gave me a YOU CAN DO IT! sort of pep talk.

I always find Madeline's books a little weird, and this was no exception. She buys rugs from a merchant. The girls in the boarding school use them as flying carpets which whisk them to their parents' homes for Christmas.

At the beginning, it showed them sad in bed, and my son asked why they were sad and I explained they had colds. Then I realized at the end that it was because they couldn't see their parents for Christmas. (Why weren't they allowed out of the boarding school for CHRISTMAS????)

I loved this book when I found it in a library when I was a kid. I wanted to buy it but I think it is out of print? Our library has it, and we enjoyed, although it was a little on the negative side. I got tired of Santa saying, "Blooming this. Blooming that." But the illustrations make it amazing.

This book is pretty darn sweet. It is all about the lives of three boys and three girls who live in three houses out in the Swedish countryside. They do things like take care of their teacher when she is sick, sell cherries on the side of the road, and take care of a baby who gets into mischief. Maybe the only thing people might like about it is that it sometimes uses the word "stupid."

Interestingly, in the orignal Swedish their houses are not called Noisy Village, but Bullerbyn. And in England, it is Bullerby. It was changed to Noisy Village for the American edition of the book. I personally love "Noisy Village" though!

This is the sequel to "The Children of Noisy Village" but I haven't read that because unfortunately I couldn't get a copy.

Also, this is by the author of Pippi Longstocking, so it makes me want to read that book, although I've heard it is not as great (?)

This is a nice story about a woodcarver who is grumpy because his wife and child died some time earlier. A pretty widow lady and her son show up at his door and ask him to carve a manger scene. Of course, Mr. Toomey becomes a nice guy again and at the end of the story goes to church with the widow lady and her son.

I sort of think this is the sort of story that adults will appreciate more than most children...... unless your kid is into stories that sort of feel like made for tv movies.

My book is a library book and it is British, and the title is "Christmas at Bullerby." (In Swedish, the village is called Bullerbyn.) I think it is basically the same as the American version, in which they changed the title to "Christmas at Noisy Village."

This is an adorable book about the lives of some close-knit Swedish children during the Christmas season. The illustrations are adorable. I do wish it had included the candles for St. Lucia's Day, a tradition unique to Sweden.

This is the sort of book I want to give as a Christmas present!
