One of Chuck's more eccentric works, in my opinion, and I'm aware that's saying a lot. I find the sci-fi aspects of the story to be an interesting addition to his repertoire, even if it doesn't always hit the mark. The twist at the end is a serious WTF moment, but I bought into it, although just barely. But I do enjoy this deviation from his usual style in being an all-personal account of Rant Casey's life history from the people who knew him. Solid, makes me appreciate the adaptation for the film much more. I think McCarthy's one of those authors that people will either dive right into or get turned off by pretty quickly. I devoured this book, reading it cover to cover between and during legs of a flight from Austin to Vegas.
