Like Li-Young Lee’s Rose, there’s a tenderness and fragility to this short book of twenty-five poems, and yet, the expansive voice and deep imagery are so powerful. One is struck by how intimate this author is with the smallest, most delicate life around him, how he bares his heart to loss, memory, the page, how symbol and surrealism in the poems infuse and illuminate the author’s vivid, surprising truths about a world that seems familiar one moment and entirely foreign, almost dreamt, in the next. ...less

This book blew me away. The scenes—the exquisite rendering of, and the pace at which they are delivered—are unforgettable. The relationship between the father and son is heart-wrenching, their plight so bleak, so chilling, but heroically tender in spite of the ravaged end-time in which they struggle to survive. McCarthy’s style astonishes in how it is simultaneously spare and breathtakingly elegant. ...less

This book of greatest hits draws from six books (plus some new poems) published in as many prolific writing years. The voice is bold and animated. The poems tend to be longer narratives, but move along with momentum and skillful attention to language and rhythm. Duhamel’s speaker is both vulnerable and commanding. She uses humor, irony, and an invigorated imagination to create work that reaches beyond its obvious political, social, and gender concerns...less

This is Maclay’s second book, and in it she takes her previous lyrical explorations in prose poetry format to the limit. There’s a deep sensuality and thoughtful, quiet intensity to the work. She weaves in and out of surfaces, layers of language, time and personal revelation. The music created through “self-startling” observation, so richly felt and expressed in highly energized, extended sentences draws the reader into Maclay’s interior, suspended imagery and allegiance to the moment. ...less
