Fallen Angels is a class Walter Dean Myers book. Walter does a great job depicting the Vietnam War through the eyes of fictional characters. The main character in the book is Perry and he is from Harlem. He sees the war as a way for him to dull the pain of not being able to attend college. He volunteers for the war and later realizes the real horrors of war. His platoon or comrades have to deal with Vietcong everyday and he watches death right in front of his eyes. Perry is a character that represents those who saw war as easy or not as bad. Later on it is all different.
This book deals with major themes like death, politics, race, comradeship and much more. Perry realizes how politically wrong the war is and questions why the US is here. Also with race, he wonders why the black troops always get the more dangerous missions. Furthermore, his comrades are like his brothers and he becomes close to them. He sees some of them fall victim to the Vietcong. This book really brings out the horror of the war and how Vietnam was a devastating loss for the US and this book questions if Vietnam was worth it. I recommend this book to people who like Walter Dean Myers' writing and books on historical events.

This book gives a great depiction of the Civil War through the eyes of a grandfather that went through the war. In the book we see the horrors of war and how it started. It was also good to read about a war that I learned in the eight grade. I read about what I learned in class. The war was a dangerous and bloody war that took a lot of lives and this book really gives that account.
A big theme that appears in the book is comradeship and survival. Everyone is looking to survive and get through the war no matter what they have to do. You have to sacrifice things in life that are most important for you to survive. Moreover, for comradeship each person relies on the other for survival or to get through the war. I recommend this book to anyone who likes reading war books and that speak of historical events.

This book was an autobiography by Ronald Dahl who is one of the most famous authors there is. He has written many famous books and is really well-known. Many may ask about his life, so this is the perfect book. He uses humor to portray his life. In this book he writes about his life from the beginning until the time he became an author. He includes funny short stories like when he said how he played a prank on the store clerk by putting a dead mouse in the candy box. He was a trouble maker along with his friends.
I enjoyed this book because Ronald didn't just write a boring auto-biography but included humor and short stories of his life. Every chapter was a different experience about his life. A big theme is family and growing up in this book. He had to change his child ways to become a great author. I really enjoyed reading and recommend it to those who like Ronald Dahl. ...less

This book had really odd and different stories that were interesting to read about. They turned around stories that we've read like little red riding hood and change it around to make it scary and a sort of fantasy like story. This book reminds me of Ray Bradbury's Martian Chronicles. Moreover, one story that I liked was the one in the beginning where a family has to deal with a specific species of human that is illegal in the town. However, the mother keeps him and protects him, until her husband finds out and reports her and the odd species. He turns in his own wife. Laurel does a great job of creating a society where we are not accustomed to or probably will never experience.
This was a fantastic book and I enjoyed reading short stories that dealt with horror and fantasy. Laurel did a good job creating and changing stories we've read when we were younger. A big theme in this book is betrayal like I explained in the first paragraph. I recommend this book to anyone looking for something different.

This was a great book with a genre I really enjoyed. I like reading books that are fantasy or write about the future when there is new technology and accomplishments. This book is about a series of missions to Mars by man. Each mission fails like the other. They die or strangely disappear. Later on in the book there is a different outcome which I don't want to spoil. This is one of Ray Bradbury's best books and an example of his talent for writing fantasy. Each chapter is different and unique. Bradbury always keeps you guessing in every scene and chapter.
A theme that appears in the book is comradeship and trying to do something never done before. The astronauts or soldiers sent there have a strong relationship and must rely on each other in order to survive. This bond is what keeps them going. However, when they split up they disappear. Finally, their willing to be the first on Mars is what inspires them. This is a fantastic book and I recommend this book to those that love fantasy or a different kind of book you don't see everyday. ...less

This book was a tremendous book with a unique style. Chris Rock writes about his life in one big skit and throws in chapters of skits or scenes of modern day. Chris Rock writes of being a kid, growing up, life, race, famous people, key figures and much more. This is a book that will have you laughing out loud and having a great time like no other.
What I like about this book first off is the humor and how Chris Rock is willing to go where others will not. He brings out the comedy out of every topic there is. Chris shows off his talent with each chapter and really gets better throughout the book. This book deals with the themes of racism, friendship, love, making a living and much more. This was one of the more unique books I read because before I didn't read or was not into comedy books. This book was recommended to me and now I would like to recommend this book to everyone looking for a good laugh. ...less

This is a great and interesting book because it shows that when you put your mind to it even the big things can come true. This book is about a boy named Arturo Morales and how his class wants to build a public park in their neighborhood which is an almost impossible task to accomplish. He lives in a broken down gang-run neighborhood that is filthy and the city really doesn't even pay attention to it. Another key part to the book is his brother who gets in trouble with gang violence and almost dies because of this.
This was another inspiring story about how a bunch of kids could get a park build that costs over forty thousand. They raised the money them self and used all kinds of fundraising techniques to do it. Next time our school sees something impossible, we can make a difference ourselves. Finally, this book shows how dangerous gang involvement can be and shows that they make promises to protect you and help you, but in the end always break it.

Ironman is about a boy named Bo who is going through tough times and is a troubled kid. His terrible relationship with his dad has made him a short-fused and ill tempered kid. He really doesn't care about school and one day has a terrible outburst at his teacher bringing him to the brink of getting expelled. However, he is put in anger management with kids like him who are even worse and dangerous to others. This time he can't mess up. If h fails the class he is done with school affecting his career. This class is also pushing him to have a better relationship with his dad.
This book was a fun book to read because it dealth with the theme of change and becoming a better person. It teaches you that you have to be open to change and try to turn your life around before its over. Bo first only cares about himself and his dream to be in the Ironman tournament. However, he doesn't look at the things that he needs to do before he can be that person. It's a not a one day thing. Failing in school is not going to get the job done and arguing with your dad is another thing impeding his dream. ...less

Danny Walker is one of the smallest kids on his travel team, but this doesn't stop him. He is a great player, but when he tries out for the city travel team he is rejected by the coach who has a big grudge on Danny's father, that dates back to when they were younger and playing basketball. Danny's dad went to the pros and got all the attention and spotlight. Now Danny is not on any team until his dad creates his own travel team that consists of the castoffs or bench players. This is an inspiring book that has a great, satisfying ending.
This book gets five stars because it is an underdog story that shows how even if your team is not the best, you can always work and step up to the challenge. I am a basketball player myself and the Baruch team is not the best team there is. We are underdogs in our division. I could really connect to this book. Mike Lupica did a good job depicting and creating a classic inspirational sports story....less

Kit’s wilderness is about a boy named Kit who moves into a new neighborhood called Stonygate. To make the summary short or to the point, Kit meets a strange boy named John Askew who plays this haunting and magical game where one can see spirits. At first Kit is scared of Askew and Askew even threatens to kill him after Askew is suspended from school for playing this game. Everyone saw Askew as evil and mysterious, but Kit sticks with him and learns a lot about John and Kit helps him get back to a normal mental state. Kit also learns of his ancestors, and his grandfather’s job at the coal pits, and much more. He learns the whole story of the town.
This story is a great example of not judging a book by its cover. The whole town viewed Askew as deranged and weird and so did Kit at first, but he was the only one who decided to help him and stuck with hi. In the end he learned a lot about himself and his family. He became a better and more understanding person. He also helped John with his mental and physical health by saving him when he was lost. Finally, I can connect this book with Soldier Boys because in both of these books, characters learn to deal with danger and not judge a book by its cover. If you liked Soldier Boys and you like fantasy, this is the book for you.
