I hesitated reading this book despite the good reviews it was getting just because I've never really liked anything Steve Martin's written before. But I finally picked it up. I think my preconceived notions got in the way in the first few pages, but after that it sucked me in. I loved it.Martin was honest and thoughtful and the story of his rise to fame was fascinating....less

A true story about a couple of liars. One is the author, a former New York Times writer who was fired for fudging on a story. The other was a young Jehovah's Witness man who was charged with killing his wife and three children before escaping to Mexico and impersonating... a New York Times writer named Michael Finkel, the author. A compelling read. I don't think I agree with the author's conclusions, but it was a fascinating book from start to finish....less

This yearly series is fantastic. I've read about four of them. If you think it's all grisly murders, think again. They're all extremely well-written and compelling features from top magazines and cover anything that can remotely be called a crime: theft, terrorism, embezzling, prostitution and, yes, murder, too. My favourite, among a bookful of favourites, was a 50-page story on the Chechnian terrorists who took over a school. Fascinating stuff....less

Hugely disappointing. It was as if someone just transcribed a bunch of his anecdotes without ever once asking a follow-up question to give the stories more depth. I'm a fairly slow reader and I finished the book in a day. "Chapters" ranged in length from about two pages to half a page. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone but a diehard Rickles fan (as I am)....less

I loved this book (and the British TV series based on it) on every level. It works as a biography of six philosophers (Socrates, Seneca, Epicurus, Montaigne, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche), an overview of their philosophies and how they relate to modern problems. And all readable for stupid people like me....less
