The Half Brother by Holly LeCraw
“Every year, when we finished Gatsby, I read the last page aloud. Also, every year, I wept... I almost looked forward to it. Crying once a year is probably necessary... it was involuntary, almost external, like being rained on, a nourishment, and it made me glad that I could feel that deeply, or had once.”

The Half Brother by Holly LeCraw
“Sometimes there were kids who were simply born to be thirty, or fifty, or seventy; I could see their unfinished teenaged faces overlaid with the transparencies of their aged selves and had to resist telling them so - that the maturity that wanted was going to happen, that someday they would look as completed as they felt, in their fleeting, truest moments.”

An initially classy and intelligent prep school-set read that perplexingly devolves into soap opera territory by the end, pushing the bounds of credibility. Still, enjoyed 75% of it enough to warrant a 4 star rating I suppose.

A compelling read about a deliciously dysfunctional literary family! And a play that actually translates pretty well on paper, too.

Not a lot of meat on these bones. Some interesting photos and anecdotes, for sure! But you won't necessarily find many hard-hitting insights about the elusive artist.

A charming chick-lit offering that has some refreshing brain power behind it. And Don is a completely endearing narrator. Makes total sense that the author mentions in his Q&A that the book started as a screenplay, as it reads very "cinematic." C ...more

“A book is so soon made, costs so little, and may go so far! Why should we surprised that all human thought flows that way?”
Victor Hugo, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame

“I just realized that you may not know what 'fin' means. It is a filmmaking term. Specifically, it is French for 'This movie is over, which is good, because it probably confused the hell out of you, because it was made by French people.”
Jesse Andrews, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

“A naive, excitable teenaged reader is a beautiful thing. Someone who's never heard of Elizabeth Bennet or Jay Gatsby, until you tell him. And they all still believe in truth. That's the fun of it.”
Holly LeCraw, The Half Brother

“Never underestimate a good sleep.”
