Sigh…since I’m pretty much the last person on earth to read the series, I didn’t think anyone would care about what I thought. I’ll explain myself. I’d rate the first 650 or so pages two stars and the last 200 or so pages as a four. Since the majority of the book was just a two for me that’s what I put as my over all rate.
I felt most of the book had a severely negative tone that increased as I read. Ashley and Tony were reading along with me at the same time and I got stuck in a rut with this book. They kept encouraging me to stick with it. They have finished the series but I had to stop and read other books in between because I couldn’t stand it any longer.
I struggled from the beginning and then I kept thinking maybe when they finally get to school the story will get better and for me it just didn’t. The negativity of everything drug on and on. Umbridge is self explanatory, she sucks. Dumbledore is a jerk to Harry (which is later explained). Hermione was super annoying. She’s the best in the class and continually whines that she is going to do horrible when you know she will ace the tests. Her self pity party got old fast. I expected Luna to have more of a purpose other than providing means for the interview but she seemed to be there for no real reason. Cho deserved a good smacking or two. Quidditch has always been Harry’s thing so I didn’t like Ron sort of taking over that role. Hagrid’s absence made a huge difference to me. And I don’t feel there was enough explanation of the Order and its purpose other than they are the good guys. Of course the ending was fantastic which gave me hope for the last two books. (I have not seen the 5th or 6th movies yet so I didn’t know and don’t know the direction the books take.)
With that said, I think Rowling is an absolute genius. I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a series so much. Book 3 is still my favorite but I’m loving book six and I only expect to love book seven even more. I want to read it all the time but I’m trying to ration myself because I don’t want it to end. I’m fan for sure. I can’t wait for my girls to be old enough so we can read them together.
