this is the second book in the series and while I still liked it a lot, since a lot of the story took place on land and dealt with the relationship difficulties of the two main characters, it was fairly different from the first in tone. I'm starting to get used to O'Brian's rather abrupt way of skipping over significant action and time without much in the way of sentence transition too.
I'm still loving the series and will start the third book - HMS Surprise - soon but am going to take a bit of a break from seafaring....less

This was a fantastic book that actually challenged me to READ the words because it was a vocabulary I was completely unfamiliar with. That being said, the language gripped you and made you WANT to figure out what was there and what all the sea-going descriptors meant. I found myself constantly trying to form the mental image of what they were describing and since Maturin's character was new to seafaring, there is a lot of explanatory text to help us newbies along the way.
I definitely look forward to reading the second book!...less

I really did like the dynamic and development of the Bears though. Iorek was deep without being dominant in the story line. I wish that it had made me interested in more books of the series but.. it really didn't. I might be interested in a spinoff series centered around the Bear culture he created though - that was unique and made me curious....less
