Set on a remote tropical island whose inhabitants are simple black people and a white man, this is a story of how the unknown and differences create fear and ignorance.
One day a war between the redskin soldiers who belong to the government and the rebels break the island's peaceful routine. In spite of the grim background of the war, the story is lightly written and amusing sometimes.
I like the part when the soldiers are threatening the people because they think those people are hiding a man named Pip. Pip is actually a character from Dickens' Great Expectations. The book is being studied by the native children taught by the only white man, Mr. Watts.
A worth to read story, and be prepared to read Great Expectations fisrt :-D ...less

A light and nice read, keeps me thinking, "What I really wanna do in life?" I thought I knew the answer long before already, it's just the road to go there which keeps changing, I guess, or maybe I forget sometimes.
But it's nice to know that there are really 'so many roads lead to Rome'.

"It's a fun way to learn about philosophy and the thoughts of great thinkers such as Socrates and Aristotles, to the present ones.
I think it is a history of philosophy disguised in a novel. (Mmm... is that why the main character's name is Sophie?)

There were not many Indonesian novels which gave me such feelings as when I was reading Laskar Pelangi. Not even those books from Balai Pustaka era and Pujangga Baru era we were supposed to read in high school, or from latter eras, although some I tried to finish reading late at night just because I wanted to know the ending. So I guess they were interesting enough for a junior high school student, me, lol. I even liked Belenggu because of the uncommon theme at that time. Saman was ok but it's forgettable. When I was a kid I loved reading Lupus series, I even named my chicken after one of the characters, Iko-Iko.
It's very subjective, I know. :-)

Just like its title, the story has a hopeless and ironic ending. The characters don't seem to have a hold on their destiny. Well, do we?
It's interesting to read, though. The culture is changing, the values are changing, the culture shock is amusing, still the characters... well, they inherit loss.

A friend told me that war is inevitable. I don't really agree to this. If we really really try, maybe... I'm not sure. But perhaps... if everyone read books like The Kite Runner, then this concept suddenly appears in their mind and heart that all people are equal, that we are all brothers because we are all created by God, maybe....
Anyway, this is a wonderful book. I'm sure it will leave something in your heart to ponder about what the essence of life is.

Bereaved father and daughter after the sudden and tragic loss of their wife/mother and daughter/sister moved to a place unknown where they isolated themselves from the world, until they found an abandoned born infant on the snow, dying.
This warm story tells about a journey to self-realization and the 'letting go' process which often painful but has to go through... somehow.

A magical story of Africa told by a little boy who seems to live in two worlds: on his land with his dreamy father and his hard-working mother, and on the land of spirits.
You can't help feeling compassion toward the boy, his gentle character in the harshness life around him.
The words are beautifully and magically written like a poem, the story is bitter. It tells about Africa in changing. The old Africa with its magic world, spirits, mantras, dances; the emerging Africa with its politics, poverty, development.
A good read.

It's a touching book about death. Death belongs to all of us but it seems that we despise death and are not ready when it's knocking on our door.
It's a story of a man who recalls his own life until the day the death comes, when attending his own funeral. It's a story of getting old, of decaying body, of lost and regrets, of hope too.
A nice read! ...less
