Graham Greene's The Third Man is an interesting book that is perhaps better known as Carol Reed's film adaptation. It's interesting to note that Graham Greene worked on the novel with the film in mind and was talking to Reed about the story as he was writing it. He has even said that he felt the story was better suited for film than for literature. I think he was right. Yet Greene's novel is still intriguing and complex. One interesting change is the point of view; the story is told by Inspector Calloway, who hears it from Rollo (not Holly) Martins. So most of the stories events come to us second or third hand, making you wonder if you're actually getting the real story or not, especially since Rollo shows himself to be an often less-than honest individual. The lack of hard facts and witnesses in this mystery/detective story remains an interesting point for me.
And yes, I did read this one in German as well, which is interesting since the story takes place in Vienna, but involves non-German speakers dealing with language barriers, yet the whole book is in German. Is that funny to anyone else? Ok, I'm just silly. But for any second-language German speaker who is looking for a good, quick, but slightly more challenging German book, this would be a good one. It took a little more time for me because of some language limitations, but a dictionary and some patience can help alleviate that problem a bit. ...less

The Little Prince is French, but as a native English speaker, I decided to read it in German. It's a good one for learners of German to read for the perhaps obvious reasons that it's short, easy, and just wonderful. Naturally, this is a fairy tale working to make a point about people, life, and a whole load of other important topics relating to the two big ones I've mentioned. The point is well made. Beautiful story that certainly deserves to be read to the kids, but we adults should think about the ideas and message too....less
