After reading William Burroughs, Augusten Burroughs doesn't shock much. He has his funny moments and I like the fact that he knows when he is behaving badly, but he doesn't do much to reform himself. The worst was the rat/thing chapter...awful and cruel...after the raid did he have to pour scalding water to drown it??? super cruel...otherwise, easy to read and entertaining. ]]>

I really enjoyed reading this book. I felt that he has grown as a writer. My favorites were Rosa and Vincente's accounts and I liked that he didn't tie up all the loose ends and left it to the reader's imagination...I really want to go to Manilla right now. ]]>
Very well written, yet easy to read. She delves into a very complex situation through her characters each representing a perspective that is fairly realistic. She is fair in describing the exploitation of the Congo by the west, but she also mentions many problems within the country like genital mutilations of girls, the castle that they visit built with human bones and flesh and mass superstion etc. Anyway, its been a long time since I've read a 650 page book, but I could not put this down. ]]>

About a girl gang in the 50's. well written, more interesting towards the end...could picture the characters...am told there is a movie..unsure if i want to see it.. ]]>
